Joan was been a midwife for over 20 years retiring from actively doing births in 2005. She had a home birth practice in Flagstaff from 1983 until 1993. Then was a part of 2 nurse-midwifery group practices in Tucson: Kino Nurse-Midwives until 2000 then University Midwives until 2002. Rachel and Joan started Acacia Midwifery which operated until 2005 when due to no physician collaboration for hospital births, was forced to close. Joan is still available for consultations or referral information about midwifery and on occasion does attend a home birth. Rachel did home births in Tucson for many years prior to becoming a labor and delivery nurse and later a CNM working with Joan in the Acacia hospital-based practice. She currently works as a nurse-midwife doing prenatal care and well woman gynecology (not doing births) in the physician practice of Alicia Costantino: 2055 W.
